meeting the requirement for Health

Monday night we had Ms. McGuffey from the Pediatric Clinic come talk to the boys about germs, small cuts, and hygiene. She brought the blood pressure cuff, the little light they shine in your ears and down your throat, and the stethiscope. She tried to get them to say the technical name for the blood pressure cuff, I'm not going to try to say it, much less spell it! She gave them all handouts and a prescription for good health. They made first aide woggles and got treats for saying the cub scout promise, motto and all the bobcat requirements.

We turned in our popcorn sales and discussed the football game this weekend.

Of course, there are no pictures here because I didn't take the camera and apparently everyone else forgot theirs too! Oh well, they had fun....I can attest to that!

cub family weekend

What does Cub family weekend mean to me? .....hmmmm, as a GIRL, I would say, breathing dust for two days, drinking bug juice, and fighting off mosquitos big enough to carry me off....but the scouting part of me says...fun, fun, fun!!!! There was canoeing, bb guns, bow and arrow shooting, indian dancing, toasting marshmellows until they were black, sleeping 5 in a tent, maybe the girl side of me coming out again....., catching and releasing a young opossum, listening to the owls and the coyotes at night, eating great food, making new friends and having great conversations around a campfire. Oh, and the best part of all.....telling boys who have not camped before over and OVER AND OVER AGAIN....NO, THERE ARE NO BEARS!!!!

Our flag

This achievement was to teach the boys about the U.S. flag and how to properly present it. We brought in a flag and gave each boy the opportunity to learn how to properly fold a flag. We did the Pledge of Allegiance and learned the difference in saluting the flag in uniform and in regular clothes. We learned how to display the state flag with the U.S. flag and our pack flag. We ate Star Spangled Cupcakes, compliments of one of our supportive parents!

We sang the Star Spangled Banner and America, very badly, I might add. We ended this meeting with a BANG! Fireworks! In the ROOM???!!!! How, you might ask? PopRocks candy....what else!
The next meeting, we finished up our achievement on the flag. We gave the boys the opportunity to draw a design of what they thought our den flag should look like, and then went across the street to the Boy Scout house and the big boys assisted us with the outdoor flag ceremony and let two of our boys help them open their meeting by carrying the flags. We were so proud!

Feats of Skill

Actually this was our second meeting. The first one, we all got together and met all the new guys and tried to remember names! We played a couple of games outside, found the room where we would meet, and were dismissed.

The Feats of Skill night was energy burning fun! We started off by running through a huge banner like at the beginning of a football game. As you can see from the pictures, all smiles and laughing, they did all kinds of stuff. They played catch and tumbled and jumped as high as they could. They had to walk a straight line. Well, we didn't stop there. We used the markings on the floor in the gym and walked frontwards, backwards, sideways and frontwards again to make a box. They walked like an elephant and a crab and leaped like a frog.
Afterwards, we signed off on their books, gave them a certificate of accomplishment and the trophy......a sweat sock full of candy. I think they all rested well that night....I know we did!

In the beginning....

The purpose of this blog is to keep parents and family up to date with the goings on of Pack 27 Den 5..... We have a good time in our little room in the corner. There are usually around 16-20 boys who attend, depending on what's happening at school, and about that many parents. It's amazing the support we have...I'm the leader of these boys. The parents and I are working together to make this a fun year for the boys. We have a Den Chief who works with us as well.

I will be posting pictures from our previous meetings to get caught up to date, but first, I gotta get more coffee!
